1968 年10 月23 日NYのヴィッレッジ・ゲイトの「階上」(2 階に)あったトップ・オブ・ザ・ゲイトでのライブを余すところなく完全収録。しかも曲順もライブで演奏されたそのすままに収めたこの復刻は、ファンの心をとらえてやまないはずです。いうまでもなく、演奏は素晴らしいの一言。曲目を見ておわかり頂けるように、演奏されたのは、ビル・エヴァンス・スタンダードとも言うべき楽曲揃い。“エミリー”をオープニングに、のべ17 の曲にあえて説明は不要とも言える構成であり、詩的でリリカル、どこを切ってもビル・エヴァンスの実にビル・エヴァンスらしい演奏を聴くことができます。
メンバーは、スコット・ラファロ亡きあとを継ぎ、11年間もの長きにわたって重責を見事に果たしたエディ・ゴメス、そして、マーティ・モレル。そうです、本トリオは日本人が待ちに待ち望んだビル・エヴァンス初来日公演(73 年)のメンバーであり、68年の録音はその後7 年に及ぶことになるレギュラー・トリオの原点、出発点であるわけです。そこには、トリオ結成初期ならではの、またはライブならではの、テンポの走りなどもありますが、そうした“生”な感じは正にジャズであり、エキサイトしたパッションの証でもあるというものです。
もちろん、テーマとソロの美しい展開は言うまでもなく、また、『ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ』の中でも超名演とされる“枯葉”におけるブロック・コードを使ったお馴染のイントロ、またシンコペーションを多用して美しくもスリリングなソロを展開する演奏は、これぞ、エヴァンス!と言えましょう。ジャズ・ピアノ・トリオの粋が詰まった17曲!よくぞの復刻です!!(infoより)
